The lost, forgotten or overlooked marginal zones and irregularities of interior spaces are made a point of ephemeral spectacle through performance that seeks to expose them. Angela Bartram and Douglas Gittens form a practical and tangible collaboration to explore this phenomena by fusing the dynamics and complexities of the performer’s body with the fixed conventions of architectural drawings. Recorded through orthographic drawing conventions and responses to it made by the performer’s body, the project generates a narrative cartography of corporeal and orthographic intervention within the interior of X Church, Slum Gothic in Gainsborough. The body is used as an instrument to record and describe the interior beyond, yet from within, traditional architectural systems of representation to expose the traces, the lost and unrecorded spaces, irregularities, marks, blemishes and scars that exist within the space before, during and after the performance act.

Never work with children or animals. Neither can tell the difference between performance and real life. The performance theorist Richard Schechner reiterates this common belief when he notes that the ‘great difference between human and non-human performers is the ability of humans to lie and pretend’. This week ‘Nature Calls’ has invited the artist Angela Bartram to discuss her work with performing animals and thereby question this common understanding of ‘animal acts’.
